UUM ONLINE: In an effort to restore the eminence of Islamic calligraphy arts, the launching of the Heritage House and Islamic Calligraphy Arts took place at the closing ceremony of the NBOS Grant of Restoration of Islamic Calligraphy Arts Activity Centre at ALAAD, Arau, Perlis.

The venture which was spearheaded by Head of Research, Dr. Mardzelah Makhsin together with her team managed to establish the Perlis Community Calligraphy Arts Activity Centre.

According to her, the main objective of the project was to provide a comfortable infrastructure for students to enable them to access the Islamic calligraphy arts education effectively and to ensure that what remains of Islamic heritage would continue to be exalted.

According to her, the art of Islamic calligraphy or more synonymous with the name of “khat” would remain as the world's oldest treasures still retained by Muslims.

"With the development of Islam spreading across the globe, Islamic calligraphy is being adapted to the prevailing changes without losing Islamic characteristics and values.

Based on this awareness, the project initiated by the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) initiative, the University Community Transformation Centre (UCTC), the Northern Corridor Research Centre (NCRC) and the School of Education and Modern Language (SEML) in collaboration with the spiritual sub-unit, UUM Co-curriculum Centre and Al-Alawiyah Diniah Religious Secondary School, Arau (ALMAAD) was launched.

"Various efforts have been undertaken, including the restoration of the Islamic Calligraphy Arts activity centre at the 30-year-old, al-Alawiyah Diniah Religious Secondary School, Arau, which was previously inactive due to incomplete learning facilities.

"The MYR8,000 project is one of the joint projects of NBOS with the community that is expected to stimulate the students' enthusiasm  to learn Islamic calligraphy arts with calligraphy writing skills," he said.

According to the Director of Northern Corridor Research Centre (NCRC), Prof. Dr. Rohana Yusof, the restoration of the Islamic calligraphy arts centre had gone through several phases such as refurbishment work at the calligraphy gallery, the installation of fences and flooring.

"With the strategic combination of various parties, the project worth MYR8,000 was successfully implemented within 4 months from 1 November 2017 to 28 February 2018," she said before launching the ceremony.

Through the NBOS grant, the project also successfully obtained contributions from the community in the form of paints, curtains, green planks, stone chairs, apart from that the local community too contributed greatly to the restoration of the heritage home and calligraphy.

"With this facility, students are able to practice entrepreneurial skills as well as craft skills because they also accept bookings and sell the craft products which they produced," she said as she inspected the products with “khat” written on plates and small planks which were on sale.

In fact, through this project the young generation would possess the Islamic calligraphy arts skills which would bring about impact on the preservation of the heritage of Islamic civilization and thus commercialize the self-produced art by ALMAAD students.

Earlier, His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail launched the Perlis Community Islamic Calligraphy Arts Club at ALMAAD Arau, Perlis on 27 February.
